First Things First

Dear Reader,

"Who the heck is this guy writing blog posts about starting a business? What does he know?"

You might be asking yourself a few questions, or perhaps, asking me or would like to know. Feel free to skip this post, I'll just give you a bit of a background on me, who I am, where I come from, some of my experiences, education, motives, and desires to pursue a career of my own - since there doesn't seem to be a job out there for me, nor do I feel like working as a corporate dog and waiting for my treat. Yes, definitely might not be as lucrative, but there's more to life than just money - and these are the words coming out from a twenty-eight-year-old who still lives with his parents and has three cents in his savings account.

My great-grandmother was born in Chicagoland suburbs, somewhere. Not sure, never asked, never bothered, but would like to find out more. She moved out to Europe in the early 1900s, to Poland. My grandmother was born there and came back to the U.S. in hopes of a better life, better opportunity, etc. My father came to the U.S. in the early 90s, and I officially left a small farm village to the "big city of Chicago!". More specifically, the suburbs near O'Hare International Airport. I was ten years old.

Skip ahead a few years, everyone always talking about doing everything you can for yourself, so I tried. Do what you wish, do what you enjoy, and you will succeed. Graphic design, computer programming, gaming, automotive mechanic, then design, then web design and Photoshop. I skipped around too much to decide on what I wanted to do. Moving on, graduated high school in 2009, started community college and finished with Exercise Science in 2013. Transferred to the Concordia University of Chicago in River Forest, IL to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Exercise Science in 2016. Whilst still working at the same community college I graduated from, I started teaching. As the manager of their Fitness Center, I decided to pursue a graduate degree. In 2018, I graduated with a Masters of Science in Kinesiology.

Six months later, I still didn't have a full-time job making the "big bucks". I considered quitting everything and joining my father with his construction company - typical stereotype, I know. But hey, great money in that business. I did paint for one summer, and I made more money in five days painting full-time than I did working for the college for the entire month. Sad. All this education, almost $100,000 of student loans, and I'm a part-time teacher and part-time staff for a college, with a limit of twenty-eight hours of work per week (insert "thank Obama" meme here - not a joke, the Affordable Care Act screwed me and a lot of other people over).

December of 2018, I got an offer to work as a full-time Personal Training Director for a major gym chain. Monday was my first day, and Tuesday was my last. The number of sales bulls**t they teach you equaled to a giant middle finger to my experiences, morals, education, and anything else I've ever come across. I felt disgusted. So I chose to start my own fitness studio. One that cares, and one that teaches YOU to exercise, the proper form, appropriate technique, and once you've completed your training, you are done and on your way to train on your own, and NEVER fall into the corporate nonsense and sales pitch thrown at every person walking in. At those places, all you are is a barcode number and a dollar sign.

Not at BBF, CO.

If you hung in there to the end, congrats!

TL:DR - Chicago Polak starts his own gym because he can't find a job and doesn't want to work construction. Best summary ever. :)

Stick around for more.

Cheers!

The SMART Plan

Dear Reader, You've probably head this one before in school at some point: create a SMART goal. To break it down, here is what a SMART goal is: S: specific M: measurable A: attainable R: realistic T: timely My definitions might a bit different, but they work for me specifically. Put this in words that YOU can understand, remember, and in a way to help you stay on track. A specific goal you would want to reach, and since this will be fitness related, I'll stay to that tone and environment. A specific goal would be something like "I want to lose 30 pounds" - specific, right? There's a number, there's value to it to, might pose a few questions but its there. Measurable: self-explanatory. Something you can measure. Not just the 30 pounds by itself, but you can measure it in other ways like jeans for waist size. Or your favorite shirt but can't fit in it anymore. Maybe it doesn't have a value, but you can measure it by trying out clothes. Attaina...
